Mulberry F/W16 Selwood

Truth be told, I’ve spent the better part of this day staring intently at Mulberry’s newSelwood, a new bag that you’ll find listed on their website’s Coming Soon page. Which also means in the coming weeks, you’ll be able to purchase this bag online (or in their brick-and-mortar stores around the world).

And while this is where I usually launch into the part where I tell you why this bag is a good-buy, a don’t-buy or even a die-die-must-buy, frankly, with the Selwood, I am actually kinda stuck.

Thing is, there’s nothing wrong with the bag. But on the flip side, there’s nothing right with it either. Let me explain. The Selwood is like that quiet girl in class that while nice and pleasant, had no personality. You would even call her a wallflower, which is what this bag kinda is. Measuring some 24 cm by 18 cm, the shiny calf leather shoulder sling is unremarkably simple, save for the brass-finished metal bar that’s also the clasp of the bag, where you first slide the top flap over before securing it by inserting the lower leather tab.

IMAGE: MULBERRY

With a long enough sling that you can adjust to 3 different lengths to wear it however you prefer, the bag opens to 3 compartments on the inside, along with an additional zip pocket in the middle and another patch pocket on the side, which should make organisation a breeze, especially for those OCD amongst you.

But that’s about it really. I really wish I had more to say about it, but I’m afraid that’s it from me for now, folks. Maybe I’ll change my mind over time, maybe I won’t, but who would want the ‘wallflower of bags’ when there’s always the popular girl in class around whom everybody wants to be friends with, or the goth punk-chic classmate who at least has some real personality. The Selwood, on both counts, is sadly not. But if you disagree, do look out for it when it’s launched soon, where it will be priced atGBP995 online in Burgundy, Emerald and Midnight.

Mulberry F/W16 Winsley

Categories:Other Brands

IMAGE: MULBERRY

I think sometimes I’m secretly obsessed with Johnny Coca’s Mulberry, because every other day you’ll find me stalking their online site to see if anything new came out. While part of me wants him to succeed (we all want to support the underdog, right?), the other part of me is just wondering if he is just going to import whatever he’s done at Céline wholesale to Mulberry because anything that looks like it’s from the former will sell anyway, right?

So far the report card is pretty even either way though, with the Clifton looking like the Trio, while the Maple is, in my honest opinion, a Mulberry classic in the making. And today we’ve got the Winsley, which I’m still trying to put my finger on.

Measuring some 28 cm by 19 cm, the easiest (and laziest) way to describe it is just to simply call it a fat Trio, with 3 zip compartments placed back to back, the front and back compartments larger than the one in the middle. The sides also taper out as you get to the bottom (hence the fat name-calling bit), but you know what I mean.

Worn over the shoulder or across the body by way of its adjustable sling, it’s actually quite pretty and pretty functional as well, ‘safe’ enough for work without bordering on the OL bit. Priced at GBP995, it comes in Pebbled Lamb in Black (shown above), as well as in smooth calfskin in Black, Burgundy and Clay.

Buy online via Mulberry, and while you’re there, do check out the other bag I’m quite obsessed about, the F/W16 Buckle Satchel for mens. Quite the love.

Mulberry Alexa

Categories:Other Brands

IMAGE: MULBERRY

If the chatter on the internet is to be believed (and coupled with the fact that if you check out Mulberry’s online site you’ll only see 3 bags left), the days of the Alexa are numbered. Once the most sought-after of all bags ever made by the British accessories house during the tenure of then Creative Director Emma Hill, it was all I ever blogged about back in 2009 when it first came out, and it was all you guys ever asked about.

There was the Alexa in soft buffalo leather, which was then followed by variations in metallic leathers, tweed-embossed leather and even one which came in leopard prints. They made it big, they made it small, they made so many versions of it but nothing beat the original one in Oak leather that was priced at just GBP750 way, way, way back then.

Along the way, the IT bag became irrelevant, mainly because prices literally skyrocketed overnight after Mulberry decided that it had to aspire to be a luxurious leather house with equally eye-watering prices to match, and things took a turn for the worse, with Emma Hill’s departure happening soon after.

Today, under the tenure of current Creative Director Johnny Coca, it would make sense to discontinue the bag altogether since it a) wasn’t his creation to begin with and more likely, b) to align with his new vision for the brand. And it’s telling that the bag’s run will end soon, especially when a quick check online reveals only 3 styles left. Only the originals in Oak and Black are left and priced at GBP1100 each, with a third in woven raffia leather going for GBP1250. Nothing else is left, no mini bags, no oversized pieces, no wallets, nada, zilch, finito.

Which begs the question. While it is understandable for Mr Coca to do as he pleases since he is the one who will set the new creative direction, could it be a case of too fast, too soon? Or are you happy that it’s going to go on to bag heaven aka the deepest nether regions of your bag cupboard where all the discontinued/forgotten bags go to live out the rest of their lives? And if you have always wanted one but haven’t gotten around to buying one, would you do it now?

THE THROWBACK MULBERRY BAG TYLER IS HUNTING THE INTERNET TO FIND

Categories:Other Brands

This beaut! Photo: Vestiaire CollectiveThis beaut!

In my never-ending quest to channel Alexa Chung's style circa 2010, I spent a good chunk of this weekend nursing a sunburn while deep-scrolling the "Alexa Chung" tag on Tumblr. I was reminded of a couple things: 1) I do not attempt cat-eyes nearly enough (and was reminded why this morning) and 2) Mulberry once had an incredibly good style of handbag dubbed the "Alexa" in her honor.

Alexa carrying her namesake bag that I now need desperately. Photo: Getty ImagesAlexa carrying her namesake bag that I now need desperately.

Now that six years have passed, I happen to think it's time for the "Alexa" to make a comeback. The style was equal parts practical and stylish, with both top handles and a cross-body strap, plus decorative front straps to lend the bag the appearance of a book satchel. It was the perfect size for day, whether it was lugging around a laptop (it was my grad school dream bag at the time) or the random assortment of junk I carry around now.

The problem? Mulberry, currently in the middle of a serious revamp, no longer makes the "Alexa." (If you're looking for a muse-inspired bag, the "Cara" is still around.) There's plenty to be found on secondhand sites, but the one I really want came in leopard-printed calf-hair. Currently, I've only been able to track down one — and wouldn't you know it, it sold a little over a month ago. I've set alerts on Vestiaire Collective and plan on obsessively stalking the Internet, but Alexa: If you still have that bag, and you no longer want it, hit me up.

Mulberry "Alexa" handbag, approximately $700. Available on Vestiaire Collective. (Alternatively, Mulberry "Cara" handbag, $1,500. )

MULBERRY NEW BAYSWATER BAG VS ORIGINAL MULBERRY BAYSWATER BAG

Categories:Other Brands

Mulberry-Bayswater-Bag

We know that Mulberry is reinventing and innovating for the past years, but we didn’t expect that they would redesign the iconic Mulberry Bayswater Bag.

For those that forgot about this beautiful piece, here’s brief intro refresh your memory. Released in 2003, the Bayswater bag was one of Mulberry’s first icons. The name is taken from an upmarket district in London. The design is inspired by traditional English doctor’s bag and it’s entirely crafted in the UK.

So what have been changed?

To answer this question, it’s best if we take a look at the original Mulberry Bayswater Bag.

Original Mulberry Bayswater Bag

Mulberry New Bayswater Bag

First of all, the most obvious sign of difference is the shape. You see, the original Bayswater Bag has a curvy shape and the New Bayswater Bag is more like ‘squared’. Furthermore, Mulberry has given the New Bayswater Bag an extended wing – such a design is quite popular nowadays in the fashion world. But because Celine started the trend (Luggage and Phantom Bag), it keeps reminding me of that brand.

But just to want you know – the extended wing can be pushed in and out.

Mulberry has kept most of the fundamental elements of the original Bayswater, like signature the postman lock and other details like the front flap. But we’re missing one important thing: where is the chic luggage tag?

Original Mulberry Bayswater’s Postman Lock

Mulberry New Bayswater Bag’s Postman Lock

So they have left out the luggage tag on the New Bayswater. What’s more? The postman lock is crafted smaller and the design has been changed. In the original Bayswater Bag, the Mulberry tree is crafted on the postman lock. On the new Bayswater, they have removed the Mulberry tree and added the brand’s name. Which is also nice by the way.

Mulberry New Bayswater Bag Bag – Interior

Let’s look at the inside, but not much has been changed. The original Bayswater Bag features one main compartment, one internal zip pocket and two internal slip pockets. And this is the same with the New Bayswater Bag.

mulberry-new-bayswater-bag-interior-badge

Original Mulberry Bayswater Bag

However, in the Original Bayswater Bag, we notice a Mulberry logo with a Mulberry tree badge. Now where is that on the New Bayswater?

Sizes and price comparison:

Mulberry New Bayswater Bag
Size: 28 x 36 to 45 x 17 cm (H x W x D)
Price (classic grained leather): $1550 USD, €1350 euro, £995 GBP

Original Mulberry Bayswater Bag
Size: 26.5 x 36 x 16.5 cm (H x W x D)
Price (classic grained leather): $1550 USD, €1350 euro, £995 GBP

Mulberry New Small Bayswater Bag
Size: 21 x 26 to 33 x 13 cm (H x W x D)
Price (classic grained leather): $1295 USD, €1095 euro, £845 GBP

Original Mulberry Small Bayswater Bag
Size: 16 x 26 x 14 (H x W x D) in cm
Price (classic grained leather): $1295 USD, €1095 euro, £845 GBP

So the prices are the same, but the sizes are so different. When we look at the medium sizes, the New Bayswater wins – it’s bigger in height as well as width. But when we look at the Small Bayswater, we can see that the newest version wins again. In fact, it’s much bigger, especially when you expand the wings.

So now we’ve done our part. Let us know which bag you would prefer? The newest or the original version? Drop your view in the comments below.
